Tornado RochelleElgin Assistant Fire Chief Dave Schmidt, Captain Rob Cagann and Firefighter Jason Walzak were among Illinois public safety workers who headed to Rochelle early Friday morning to assist with tornado cleanup efforts.

"The call for assistance was sent out from MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System), which defines a resource response plan to any location within the state when the governor orders a Declaration of Disaster, which he did last evening," Elgin Director of Communications Kristine Rogowski stated in a memo sent to Mayor Dave Kaptain and the City Council about the matter.

 Governor Rauner today directed the deployment of Illinois Task Force 1, an 80-member search and rescue team, to assist local responders as they search for people who may have been trapped after a tornado tore through Woodhaven Lakes campground in Lee County last evening. The village of Coal City in Grundy County was also hard hit by a tornado Monday evening.​

O​n July 1, 2014, the Executive Board of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) issued a nineteen-page document to all 1,175 of its member agencies to explain why MABAS is requesting all member agencies to execute and return an ordinance approving an addendum to the MABAS Master Agreement. The Master Agreement is the intergovernmental agreement between the member agencies that provides MABAS with the necessary authority and powers it utilizes to oversee and support mutual aid functions throughout most of Illinois and into parts of several neighboring states. Bins Hold Many Hazards

Generally, stored grain presents few hazards, but flowing grain increases the risk of entrapment and suffocation. Over the years, hundreds of deaths have occurred in bins that appeared to pose no danger. Few people realize the hazard from flowing grain. An unsuspecting farmer who enters a grain bin with the unloader running may be caught in the grain flow before realizing what has happened. It takes only 4 or 5 seconds to be submerged to the point of becoming helpless. And it takes less than 20 seconds to be completely submerged in flowing grain. A child is engulfed even more quickly.
